Amidst the flood of superhero films, the 'original' has returned. Set to be released on July 9, <Superman> tells a new story of Superman, the world's first superhero character who debuted in 1938. Instead of the existing universe or narrative, it captures the crisis faced by the undeniably powerful Superman in a world where metahumans (those with superpowers) are already part of society. Notably, this film is the first theatrical release of the newly restructured 'DC Universe', directed by James Gunn, who is set to lead that universe, raising expectations even higher. On July 3, I had the opportunity to meet the main cast of <Superman> via video call. This article shares the insights from the live conference held at CGV Yongsan I-Park Mall, featuring director James Gunn and lead actors David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult discussing <Superman>.
“I wanted to explore another world like magic, while also discovering what kind of person Superman is”
Director James Gunn
Appointed as co-CEO of DC Studios, director James Gunn is set to open a completely new 'DC Universe'. Having directed the <Guardians of the Galaxy> series for Marvel and <The Suicide Squad> for DC, he chose <Superman> as the film to kick off the DC Universe (the actual first project is the TV animation <Creature Commandos>). This film has garnered attention as it is directed and written by James Gunn himself. Regarding his choice of <Superman> as his first project, Gunn stated, “When I read comic books as a child, there were more stories about Superman meeting metahumans than about Superman and humans. I wanted to start with a story from a completely different world, and I wanted to highlight that aspect,” explaining the reason for setting <Superman> in an era where metahumans have already appeared. He also mentioned, “I wanted to explore what kind of person Superman is. What emotions does he have? So, I focused on making it both fantastic and emotionally resonant,” emphasizing that he did not overlook Superman's human side.
“The image of everyday heroes, could it be inspiring?”
Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane
This film does not start at the beginning of Superman's narrative. Therefore, Lois Lane is already aware that Clark Kent is Superman, and the two have even developed a romantic relationship, making her character more three-dimensional. Lois Lane creates dramatic moments with her professional demeanor as a journalist. Brosnahan emphasized that she did not compromise Lois Lane's character, stating, “She is the smart and conscientious person we know,” and added, “This relationship has not been depicted before, and it shows a period where they have been dating for a few months, contemplating what kind of relationship they want to have,” hinting that Lois Lane's unique struggles will be revealed in <Superman>. Meanwhile, in this film, Superman also faces public scrutiny. Although he saves people and the world as a superhero, his alien status leads to misunderstandings, and he actually faces significant criticism. Lois Lane mentions this aspect in the film. Regarding the depiction of journalism in the movie, James Gunn remarked, “Journalism is a really important part of the film. We need to consider why Superman finds Lois Lane attractive,” and added, “Lois Lane, who pursues the truth, is a superhuman strength in itself. The ability to report is globally significant.” Brosnahan also stated, “The reason Superman is beloved is that we all have a desire to save the world in difficult times. There are everyday heroes in the world. Showing everyday heroes pursuing justice can inspire others,” highlighting the necessity and greatness of the 'ordinary hero' represented by Lois Lane.
“I feel like past Superman actors are supporting me”

As the symbol of superheroes, Superman has seen many actors portray him throughout his long history in various visual works. Notably, when the universe reboot was announced, many fans hoped for the return of Henry Cavill, who played Superman in the 2013 film <Man of Steel> and throughout the DCEU. David Corenswet, who has now taken on the role of the new Superman, is certainly aware of the popularity of past actors. When asked if he felt pressured by comparisons to Henry Cavill or previous actors, Corenswet listed Christopher Reeve (1970s-80s series), Tyler Hoechlin (2021-2024 <Superman & Lois>), and expressed, “Having the opportunity to take on such a role is a privilege. Rather than feeling burdened, I feel supported by the actors who have played this character before, which gives me strength.” He explained, “It’s a rare opportunity to revisit what writers and directors have done before,” adding, “It feels like exploring new facets from the perspective of someone who is taking on a role that other actors have performed excellently.”
“Actually, I auditioned for Superman too…”
Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor
Nicholas Hoult, who plays Superman's nemesis Lex Luthor, revealed that he auditioned for Superman during the film's production. However, after the audition, director James Gunn suggested Lex Luthor, and Hoult joined the film as Luthor. In the film, Lex Luthor executes various strategies and slanders solely to undermine Superman, and regarding this aspect, Nicholas Hoult explained, “Jealousy is his driving force,” adding that this jealousy is “part of what can be considered human.” He interpreted that Lex Luthor, as a pure human, would think that the attention directed towards his excellence is taken away by metahumans. Meanwhile, when reactions emerged about the good chemistry between David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult, David Corenswet gave a thumbs up to Nicholas Hoult, showcasing their chemistry.
