The Apple-produced racing film <F1 The Movie> has recorded over $200 million in global revenue within just 10 days of its release, showcasing an unexpected box office success.
According to U.S. economic media outlets like CNBC on the 5th (local time), <F1 The Movie>, starring Brad Pitt, topped the North American box office last weekend. Since its release on the 27th of last month, it has surpassed $200 million in global revenue.
In particular, it recorded over $155 million (approximately 211.5 billion won) in revenue during its opening weekend alone, putting Apple on the verge of breaking its highest box office record for a self-produced theatrical release. The highest-grossing Apple theatrical release to date is <Napoleon>, which earned a total of $221.4 million after its release in November 2023.
The Financial Times in the UK reported that <F1 The Movie> is expected to reach $300 million in global revenue by this weekend.
Apple has primarily released its self-produced films through its streaming service Apple TV+. However, starting with <Fly Me to the Moon> in 2023, it is embarking on a full-fledged revenue model through theatrical releases.
The performance of previous works has been disappointing. Both <Fly Me to the Moon> and <Napoleon> generated about $160 million in revenue but were considered box office failures in the industry.
However, with a production budget of over $200 million and distributed by Warner Bros., <F1 The Movie> is expected to become the first summer blockbuster hit of the year.
The film tells the story of a talented young driver in Formula 1 (F1) in the 1990s who, after retiring due to a major accident in 1993, embarks on one last challenge for the championship over 30 years later. Hollywood star Brad Pitt plays the lead role, generating significant buzz.
Industry experts predict that <F1 The Movie> will reach $500 million to $600 million in global box office revenue. If total revenue exceeds $517 million, it will surpass the combined box office revenue of the four films Apple has released in theaters to date.
Jeff Goldstein, the distribution head at Warner Bros., expressed confidence, stating, "This film will continue to perform well," adding, "There is still plenty of fuel left in the engine."
