The Beginning of the Hallyu Wave 'Winter Sonata' Premieres Today (6th) in Japan as a 4K Remastered Theatrical Version

As the beginning of the Hallyu wave and a symbol of Korean drama, 〈Winter Sonata〉 is officially released in theaters across Japan today (6th) after undergoing 4K high-definition remastering and re-editing. This theatrical version is a perfect rebirth of the original drama in movie format, aiming to provide unforgettable nostalgia and emotion to fans from the 4050 generation who were shaken by the first love syndrome when it aired.

The film adaptation of 〈Winter Sonata〉 was initiated by the original production company, Fan Entertainment, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of its airing in Japan in 2023. In response to the continuous requests from Japanese viewers for a theatrical version, director Yoon Seok-ho, who led the original's success, participated directly in the entire film production process, capturing the poignant emotions. Additionally, music director Lee Ji-soo, who has worked on projects like 〈Oldboy〉, 〈Silmi-do〉, and Netflix's 〈The Silent Sea〉, joined the project to re-record the main OST 'My Memory' and other key tracks with orchestration tailored for the theater sound, adding a deep resonance.

The local response has been explosive even before the release. Tickets for the advance screening event held on the 26th of last month at the Piccadilly Theater in Shinjuku, Tokyo, sold out immediately after opening. On the day of the screening, director Yoon Seok-ho visited the venue to engage in discussions with the audience, and voice actress Tanaka Misato, who voiced the character Yu-jin in the Japanese dubbing, attended as a guest, creating a meaningful moment. Local Japanese media are also reporting on the film's release, expressing high expectations.

A monumental work that opened the door to cultural exchange between Korea and Japan and laid the groundwork for the global expansion of K-content, 〈Winter Sonata〉 aired in 2002. Even after more than 20 years, it maintains a strong symbolic status, ranking at the top in surveys of Korean drama preferences in Japan.
