Netflix original series 〈Scandal〉 (The Scandal, directed by Jeong Ji-woo, written by Lee Seung-young and Ahn Hye-song) will premiere worldwide at 5 p.m. Sept. 18. The eight-episode series is produced by Movie Rock and Sumokwon.
〈Scandal〉 tells the story of Lady Jo (Son Ye-jin), a gifted woman constrained by life in Joseon; Jo Won (Ji Chang-wook), Joseon’s most notorious romantic; the audacious and dangerous wager on love between them; and Hee-yeon (Nana), the woman who becomes entangled in that bet. The series is a reinterpretation of the 1782 French novel 「Dangerous Liaisons」 by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, set in the Joseon era.
Director Jeong Ji-woo said, "I didn't want a simple melodrama structure," adding, "I aimed to portray, in three dimensions, the desires of characters who defy Joseon's taboos, centering on protagonists who possess a modern sense of self — the question 'Who am I?'"
A newly released teaser poster and trailer show Lady Jo seated in the inner quarters among lavish blooms; Jo Won positioned among the women in a beauty painting; and Hee-yeon looking forlorn amid plum blossoms — all staged with a distinctly Korean mise-en-scène. The trailer opens with a secret wager that shakes Bukchon, where Joseon’s scholar-official elite live, and underscores the tension among the three characters.
The Netflix series 〈Scandal〉 will be released Friday, Sept. 18, on Netflix.
