Satoshi Kon’s ‘Millennium Actress’ Marks 25th Anniversary with 4K Remaster, Set for December Release; Teaser Poster Unveiled

A sweeping, film-like life story follows legendary actress Chiyoko as she spends her life searching for the one love she never forgot.

“Millennium Actress,” the acclaimed feature by director Satoshi Kon, whose singular body of work has earned him fans around the world, has been remastered in 4K and will return to theaters for its first official re-release since its original domestic release in 2004. “Millennium Actress” is a sweeping, film-like life story that follows legendary actress Chiyoko as she spends her life searching for the one love she never forgot. Following the life of an actress who defined an era, the film stands out as an epic, with an original narrative that moves freely between reality and cinema, past and present. It brings together Kon’s trademark meticulous scene transitions and stylish editing, along with the cinematic imagination made possible through animation. The re-release marks the film’s 25th anniversary and will present a sharper 4K remaster. Kon’s films “Tokyo Godfathers” and “Perfect Blue” were successfully re-released in Korea in 2024 and 2025, respectively, and “Millennium Actress” is expected to continue that enthusiasm for a third consecutive year.

The teaser poster unveiled alongside the release announcement captivates with a striking portrayal of the film’s distinctive world. Its central image is a fan-inspired illustration created to promote the film at the 1999 Berlin International Film Festival. Centered on Chiyoko in a red kimono, it surrounds her with an array of symbols from the film—including a doll representing one of the characters she played, a camera, a spaceship, a bow and arrow, a full moon and flowers—unfurling the cinematic life of “Millennium Actress” Chiyoko, who has inhabited countless lives across a millennium, like a painted scroll. The re-release poster is made even more distinctive by a new Korean-language title logo created by design studio Propaganda. Its design naturally adapts the distinctive visual form of the original Japanese logo into Korean, completing the identity of the returning “Millennium Actress.”

With visuals and a story that have not faded with time, “Millennium Actress” is expected to give longtime viewers the chance to immerse themselves in its world once again, while offering first-time audiences a special opportunity to discover the cinematic world of master filmmaker Satoshi Kon on the big screen. Commemorating its 25th anniversary with a 4K remaster, Satoshi Kon’s acclaimed “Millennium Actress” opens exclusively at Megabox this December.
