In a large-scale reader survey conducted by The New York Times (NYT), Bong Joon-ho's film <Parasite> was selected as the best film of the 21st century.
On the 2nd (local time), NYT announced the results of the survey titled 'Best Film of the 21st Century' conducted with over 200,000 readers. Released in 2019, <Parasite> was chosen as the top film.
Korean films stood out in this ranking. Park Chan-wook's <Oldboy> (2005) ranked 40th, Bong Joon-ho's <Memories of Murder> (2005) ranked 49th, and Park Chan-wook's <The Handmaiden> (2016) ranked 67th. Notably, <Oldboy> and <Memories of Murder> recorded 43rd and 99th places respectively in last month's NYT selection of '100 Best Films of the 21st Century' based on evaluations from 500 film experts, but achieved higher rankings in this reader poll.

The 2nd place went to David Lynch's <Mulholland Drive> (2001), and the 3rd place went to the Coen Brothers' <No Country for Old Men> (2007). Following them, <There Will Be Blood> (2008), <Interstellar> (2014), <The Dark Knight> (2008), <Mad Max: Fury Road> (2015), <Spirited Away> (2001), <Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind> (2005), and <The Social Network> (2010) were selected from 4th to 10th place.
It is noteworthy that <Parasite> also ranked 1st in last month's NYT selection of '100 Best Films of the 21st Century' based on evaluations from 500 film industry experts. This shows that <Parasite> is recognized as a masterpiece representing the 21st century by both experts and general audiences.
