The city of Sokcho in Gangwon Province will kick off “Sokcho Sunset Cinema 2026”, an outdoor screening venue set against the backdrop of a crimson sunset and the sea, starting on the 4th. The opening ceremony will be held at the waterfront performance venue at the port area of Sokcho Port in Yeonggeum-dong, timed to coincide with sunset every Saturday. After 12 rounds of pilot screenings through June, the event will officially begin in July—four times a month. Featuring a wide range of genres—including “independent art films”, documentaries, and films from across Gangwon—the initiative is expected to satisfy both residents’ and tourists’ thirst for culture. In particular, it has secured strong mainstream appeal through seasonal, theme-based screenings such as April melodramas and comedies, and May family dramas.
A Night Tourism Hub and a Boost for Local Businesses

More than just movie screenings, this project will act as a driving force for “revitalizing local culture”. For local filmmakers, it will provide a valuable channel to connect with the public. The strategy also aims to transform the Cheongcho Lake area by linking it with nearby ferry routes and the waterfront park into a stay-and-enjoy “night tourism attraction”. Growth in nearby commercial areas, such as Rodeo Street, is also expected to rise in step. Expanding Sokcho’s distinctive nighttime content will offer a new direction for the local tourism industry.
