The animated film 〈David〉 has confirmed its domestic release on July 15 after setting box office records in North America, and has released a teaser poster and trailer.
According to Lotte Entertainment, 〈David〉 brought in $22 million in opening weekend gross in North America, recording the highest opening ever for a religious animated film. This figure surpasses the cumulative North American box office gross of 〈King of Kings〉, the previous standout title in the same genre.
The story follows David, a young shepherd who hears from the prophet Samuel about his destiny to become king. It depicts what happens as he goes toe-to-toe with Goliath—the giant the world feared. After becoming a hero by defeating Goliath with a single stone, he faces yet another threat after drawing King Saul’s wrath.
The teaser poster, released along with the release announcement, shows shepherd David reflecting on the massive blade in a battlefield covered with red flower petals. With the contrast between the boy with no weapon and the giant Goliath looming behind him, the poster includes the tagline, “The Beginning of the Greatest Story.”
The teaser trailer also opens with a scene in which David picks up a single stone along a stream and heads for the battlefield. As David sings, “Whether arrows fly or not—night or day, I will not be afraid,” the moment he throws the stone toward Goliath is captured.
The film 〈David〉 was directed by Phil Cunningham and Brent Dods. Voice performances include Brandon Ingram, Phil Wickham, Brian Studevant, Adam Gold, and Miri Mesika, among others. It will open in Korean theaters on July 15.
