The Roundup—a legendary figure and an unstoppable detective—'Ma Seok-do''s real-life inspiration has come crashing down due to drunk driving. The deadly lawbreaking by a police officer who is meant to protect public safety is drawing intense public criticism.
According to legal circles on the 17th, the Criminal Division 1 of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Shin Do-wook) indicted A, a former officer from the Susudong Police Station in Seoul, without detention on the 15th on charges of drunk driving under the Road Traffic Act.
A is accused of taking the wheel while intoxicated and causing a collision on a road near the Gangnam Severance Hospital in Seoul's Gangnam District at around 8:30 p.m. on November 24 last year.
At the time of the stop, A's blood alcohol concentration was confirmed to have been 0.08% or higher—at a level that would result in license revocation. Fortunately, there were no injuries or loss of life.
The police placed A on immediate suspension right after they recognized the drunk-driving misconduct.
A is the real-life figure who inspired the character Ma Seok-do, the protagonist of the domestic action film series 'The Roundup.' It is widely known that actor Ma Dong-seok carried out in-depth reporting on real stories and experiences involving detectives, and based on that, developed the character as well as the film's overall storyline.
