Hollywood actor Tom Cruise’s signature ‘Top Gun’ series is making its grand return to theaters next month to mark its 40th anniversary.
The distributor Lotte Entertainment announced that Tom Cruise starrer aviation-action blockbuster 'Top Gun' and the follow-up 'Top Gun: Maverick' will be re-released simultaneously on May 13.
The original film, 'Top Gun', released in 1986, follows Maverick (played by Tom Cruise), a brilliant fighter-pilot trainee, as he enrolls in Top Gun, the elite pilot training school. Directed by the late filmmaker Tony Scott, the movie propelled Tom Cruise to instant global stardom.
The follow-up, 'Top Gun: Maverick', released in 2022—36 years after the original—captures new challenges faced as Maverick, now a legendary aviator, returns to the training school as an instructor. Joseph Kosinski directed the film, and upon its domestic release it attracted more than 8 million viewers, creating a major stir at theaters.
This re-release is drawing significant anticipation as special-venue screenings are confirmed, offering an overwhelming audiovisual experience. Screenings will be available in various formats, including CGV’s 4DX and ScreenX, Lotte Cinema’s GwangEum CineM, and Megabox’s Dolby Cinema and Dolby Atmos, delivering a vivid sense of immersion in fighter-jet flight.
Meanwhile, Paramount and Skydance are reportedly currently producing the third installment of the ‘Top Gun’ series starring Tom Cruise.
