Indieground Special Screening: “Cine Academy: An Introduction to Short Films” to Run On and Off Line!

The program features two themes—an “Introduction” section, and a “Deep Dive” section that lets audiences enjoy the expanded possibilities of original viewpoints and formats—showing a total of eight short films.

This special screening was planned to lower the barrier to going to the theater and to introduce Korean short films more broadly, while also giving audiences a chance to discover their own cinematic tastes through distinctive works. In particular, to match the original concept called “Cine Academy,” organizers prepared customized guides based on each viewer’s “short-film familiarity.” It presents two themes: an “Introduction” section with lively works that first-time short-film audiences can enjoy right away, and a “Deep Dive” section that lets them fully enjoy the expanded possibilities of original viewpoints and formats. The event will showcase eight short films in total.

In the “Introduction” section, the program highlights playful works that can pull even newcomers into short films right away. They include director Park Jung-min—who works as both an actor and a director—along with director Seong Da-som’s 〈Family Film〉, director Kim Da-won’s 〈Daldal-i-neun nae rumme〉, and director Kim Tae-yang’s 〈The Dance Only I Know〉. Composed of works that let first-time audiences experience, naturally, the tightly compressed storytelling of short films, fresh ideas, and distinctive direction, the lineup allows even those new to the format to enjoy the screenings without any burden.

The “Deep Dive” section sheds light on the expanded scope of Korean short films through more experimental and original works. Screenings run from 〈Safe〉 by director Moon Byung-gon, the winner of the Golden Palm at the 66th Cannes Film Festival in the Short Film Competition category, to director Ahn Yoon-bin’s 〈Niche TV Encyclopedia—Find the Eccentrics Across the Nation! Episode 617: The Peculiar Cohabitation of a Strange Man and a Talking Goat〉, director Park Dong-gyu’s 〈Memories in Space〉, and director Oh Yu-kyung’s 〈Spiritual Body〉. By bringing together everything from works recognized for their artistic merit at film festivals at home and abroad to titles that contain new formal attempts, the program will introduce the wide spectrum that Korean short films can offer.

The special screening event 〈Cine Academy: An Introduction to Short Films〉 is available both online and offline. Offline theater screenings will be held at Artnine on July 17 (Fri) and July 18 (Sat). After the screening, there will be a “Q&A with the director (GV)” in which creators and audiences communicate, along with a range of on-site events that use the “Cine Academy” concept, such as giving out academy completion certificate merchandise and photo-zone setups. Then, for seven days from July 25 (Sat) through July 31 (Fri), free online screenings will continue through the Indieground website. Even audiences who cannot make it to the theater can watch the works from this special screening event through the online screening hall.

The planning-screening group Eodumdan is composed of the graduates from the 4th cohort of the Indieground Distribution Academy. After completing their education, they have continued to steadily carry out voluntary planning-screening activities while also working across various areas of the film industry. They said, “We are truly grateful and honored to be able to present this special screening together with Indieground as a good opportunity,” adding, “Through this special screening, we hope that more audiences will discover the appeal of Korean short films and that it can become a chance to enjoy short films in a more familiar way.”

This special screening event, co-produced by Indieground and the planning-screening group Eodumdan, is expected to become a unique opportunity for people to enjoy Korean short films more easily and comfortably. With it built on the collaboration between Indieground and emerging planners who have shown vigorous activity in many directions, organizers expect it to become a meaningful forum where diverse audiences can experience the broad appeal of Korean short films.
