Ryoo Seung-ryong-Ha Ji-won-Kim Si-a ‘Bikwang’ Set for Sept. 2 Release—Launch Posters and Teaser Revealed

Top-star couple Jung-gu (Ryoo Seung-ryong) and Nam-mi (Ha Ji-won) face a breakup after Jung-gu’s daughter, Dong-ju (Kim Si-a), suddenly appears, then—eight years later—get pulled into a shocking incident as they risk everything to save Dong-ju.

The movie ‘Bikwang’ is the heartfelt family chronicle directed by Lee Ji-won, in which Jung-gu (Ryoo Seung-ryong) and Nam-mi (Ha Ji-won)—a top-star couple—split up after Jung-gu’s daughter, Dong-ju (Kim Si-a), suddenly shows up, and then eight years later, Dong-ju becomes entangled in a shocking incident. With everything left on the line, Dong-ju’s story centers on her desperate search for the truth as she tries to save herself.

Along with news of its Sept. 2 release, the launch poster and teaser unveiled at the same time heighten curiosity by compressing the symbolism held in the title ‘Bikwang’ and the film’s mood. The launch poster draws attention with a rear view of Ryoo Seung-ryong as Jung-gu, evoking a person holding an umbrella under the willow trees inside the hwatu card ‘Bikwang.’ The launch teaser, meanwhile, begins with a narration by Ha Ji-won, who plays Nam-mi and interprets the meaning of ‘Bikwang,’ pulling viewers in from the start.

The poster’s line, “The most shining card in a crisis,” and the narration in the teaser—“On a rainy day, a single frog was running to grab the willow trees so it wouldn’t be swept away by the rapids. It leapt up, fell down, and kept repeating the cycle of rising and falling—but the frog wouldn’t give up. In the end, it managed to grab the willow trees, survive, and live”—preview a bond among characters who hold on to one another in times of danger, as if reflecting the meaning contained in the hwatu card ‘Bikwang,’ along with a deep, tight-knit family love.

In the movie ‘Bikwang,’ director Lee Ji-won—who won the new director award in the film category at the 55th Baeksang Arts Awards for ‘Miss Baek,’ and proved her directing chops again with the drama ‘Climax’—depicts a heartfelt family chronicle. It expands further on the message of rescue shown in ‘Miss Baek.’ In the film, Ryoo Seung-ryong plays Jung-gu, who was once the best baseball player, but whose life crashes after the appearance of Dong-ju. He now plays the role of an ever-resourceful father, Jung-gu, who won’t hesitate to do whatever it takes to protect his daughter, Dong-ju. Ryoo Seung-ryong, a leading South Korean actor who starred in box-office hits like ‘Gwanghae, The Man Who Became King,’ ‘Miracle in Cell No. 7,’ ‘The Admiral: Roaring Currents,’ and ‘Extreme Job,’ and appeared in dramas such as ‘Moving’ and ‘Fine: The Villagers,’ will complete the unflinching, weighty presence of the Jung-gu character.

Next, Ha Ji-won—who has established herself as a trustworthy, must-watch actress through wide-ranging roles in dramas including ‘Damo,’ ‘A Love Story in Bali,’ ‘Hwang Jini,’ ‘Secret Garden,’ ‘Curtain Call,’ and ‘Climax,’ as well as films such as ‘Haeundae,’ ‘My Love, My Side,’ and ‘Comfort Debtor’—takes on the role of Nam-mi, a struggling entertainment figure who suddenly tumbles from top-star status because of Dong-ju, who appears out of the blue. Nam-mi is a character who can’t bring herself to ignore Dong-ju, who brings back memories of her childhood, and Ha Ji-won will deliver deeper, more layered emotional acting. Kim Si-a transforms into Dong-ju—after breaking through a 600-to-1 competition rate and debuting with the film ‘Miss Baek,’ she has grown into a next-generation actress by perfectly digesting unusual characters in films including ‘Our Home,’ ‘The Great Battle of Baekdusan,’ ‘The Witch: Part 1,’ ‘The Camera of Summer,’ and the recent works ‘Girogo’—as well as dramas ‘Kingdom: Ashin of the North’ and ‘Sweet Home.’ Kim Si-a will play a girl Dong-ju, who is branded as a suspect after a friend’s death and is pushed to the edge of a cliff, and will once again show deep synergy with director Lee Ji-won. On top of that, veteran performers Kim Hae-sook, Kim Seon-young, and Kim Young-min will appear as a distinctive family with no fear if it means protecting Dong-ju, completing an airtight ensemble of performances.
