Nah Hong-jin’s New Film “Hope” Wins the Action Cinema Award at New York Asian Film Festival

The return of a master, a new world by “Nah Hong-jin” that overwhelms North America with impact

A standout presence in Korean genre filmmaking, director “Nah Hong-jin” has left a powerful impression across North America with his new work “Hope”. Premiering across North America at the 25th “New York Asian Film Festival” (NYAFF), the film earned him the “Daniel A. Craft Outstanding Action Cinema Award”. According to the distributor “Plus M Entertainment”, at a ceremony held on the 20th (local time), Director Nah said, “I’m happy to receive such a weighty and meaningful award,” sharing his thoughts in a calm, masterful manner. The prize is a meaningful trophy honoring the late Daniel Craft, a co-founder of the festival and an ardent supporter of action cinema.

This year’s festival effectively served as a smaller-scale version of “Nah Hong-jin Universe.” Films from his entire slate of feature directorial work filled the screens in the form of a retrospective, including “The Chaser” (2008), “Haungry” (2010), and “The Wailing” (2016). In particular, the question-and-answer session held right after the screening of “Hope”—invited in the Centerpiece Presentation section—drew explosive enthusiasm from local audiences. Above all, the encounter with “Ari Aster”, the director who captivated horror fans worldwide with “Hereditary” and “Midsommar”, led to in-depth conversations between two masters, focusing global attention on the film industry.

Unveiled at last, “Hope” is a major sci-fi work depicting a struggle by people who come face to face with an unknown life form, set in the isolated port town of Hopohang near the Demilitarized Zone. Top domestic actors including Hwang Jung-min, Jo In-sung, and Jung Ho-yeon broke down into village residents, raising the film’s intensity. Alongside them, Hollywood’s star-studded cast—such as Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, and Taylor Russell—takes on the unconventional roles of extraterrestrial life forms, signaling an overwhelming ensemble that spans borders.
