[First reactions]

〈Obsession〉, the film that ranked No. 1 at the box office among horror releases this year, opens in South Korea on Sept. 2. It centers on a couple who fall in love after making a wish on a stick called 'One Wish Willow,' which grants any wish. After attending a press screening, Cineplay reporter Sung Chan-eol reviews the film.

Sung Chan-eol / ★★★★ / They say laughing after crying brings bad luck, but laughing after being scared is a blast

I worried it might be all concept and no substance, but that concern proved unfounded. The premise is familiar yet intriguing, the turns are unpredictable, and the way the film renders the grotesque is striking. Above all, the film knows exactly when to press and when to pull back, and it does so with remarkable skill. I especially liked the black-comedy moments that keep the horror intact while making you laugh. The two leads' performances and chemistry linger. It’s a debut that evokes Ari Aster's 〈Hereditary〉 and leaves you eager to see what the director does next.
