'Insidious: They Crossed Over' Unveils Behind-the-Scenes Work Behind Its Most Terrifying Moments, From Double Teeth to Elise's Costume

'Insidious: They Crossed Over' on Aug. 28 unveiled behind-the-scenes details showing the work that went into creating the film's most terrifying moments.

The new installment in the popular 'Insidious' horror series, 'Insidious: They Crossed Over', depicts what happens when the malevolent beings from the realm of the dead known as "The Further" find a passage into the human world. The film opened in South Korea on Aug. 20 and on Aug. 28 unveiled behind-the-scenes material showing how its signature terrifying moments were created.

Most notably, the film's standout "double teeth" sequence employed a unique shooting technique and practical special effects. To capture the moment Gemma is bitten on the hand by one of Cyrus's followers from inside the mouth, the crew installed a camera lens inside a model head sculpted to match the follower. Small mechanisms moved the tongue and cheeks independently, while the mouth was packed with an oatmeal-like substance to give it a vivid, tactile feel. Director Jacob Chase further intensified the scene with intricate sound design, pushing its visceral impact to an extreme and delivering intense fear to audiences.

The film also required careful work to maintain the series' continuity, which has been supported by audiences worldwide. The most painstaking effort went into the series icon Elise. Because the costume Elise wore when she died in the first film had gone missing, costume designer Liz Kuo Palmer reprinted the scarf pattern, sourced the same knit and cardigan, and dyed them to match the original colors exactly. Liz Kuo Palmer said, "I couldn't afford to miss a single small detail. Everything had to be replicated exactly, with no room for error," and her work showed her to be a meticulous craftsperson sustaining the series by preserving Elise's continuity.
