Sandra Oh's 'The Misanthrope' opens at Megabox on the 23rd, bringing unrestrained barbs to the screen

National Theatre Live's first screening: a bold feminist reworking of a 1666 classic

The commanding stage presence of Sandra Oh, the actor who captivated Hollywood, is coming to screens in South Korea. Megabox, a "life theater" company, has selected National Theatre Live (NT Live)'s The Misanthrope as the first production in this year's lineup, bringing masterpieces from the UK's National Theatre to the big screen. It will run from the 23rd through the 4th of next month.

The Misanthrope is an acclaimed work that dismantles and reconstructs Molière's 1666 classic play through a 21st-century lens. Alceste, the male protagonist of the original, has been wholly reimagined as Alice, a female novelist who delivers a searing critique of a society steeped in lies and hypocrisy. Sandra Oh, who established a distinctive acting career through global hits Killing Eve and Grey's Anatomy, plays Alice, unleashing uncompromising, razor-sharp barbs onstage.

National Theatre Live is more than a simple recording of a performance. It is an innovative project that uses theater-size screens and powerful sound systems to capture the energy of a live production, down to actors' subtle shifts in expression. With this screening, Megabox plans to present South Korean audiences with a succession of top-tier British stage productions.

Following The Misanthrope, audiences will see Rosamund Pike in Inter Alia, Imelda Staunton in Mrs. Warren's Profession, Josh O'Connor in Golden Boy, Bryan Cranston in All My Sons and Benedict Cumberbatch in the legendary classic Frankenstein, in that order. Screenings will be limited to three per week—Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays—adding to their exclusivity.
