'The Greatest Estate Developer' wins top prize at Bucheon Comics Awards; ceremony set for 18th

Unusual blend of fantasy and civil engineering opens new horizons for webtoon industry

The Korea Manhwa Contents Agency, the country's most prestigious comics institution, announced on the 3rd that it had selected the webtoon 'The Greatest Estate Developer' as the grand-prize winner of the 23rd Bucheon Comics Awards.

The series vividly follows a civil engineering student who is transported into the body of a wastrel nobleman in a fantasy world and uses modern architectural knowledge and fierce survival instincts to rebuild an estate on the verge of collapse. Based on the novel of the same name by author 'Moon Baek-kyung', the series combines 'Lee Hyun-min''s meticulous adaptation with 'Kim Hyun-soo''s dynamic artwork to deliver an overwhelmingly immersive experience.

The judging panel praised the series, saying, "It perfectly reinterprets the original's sweeping narrative with the brisk pacing unique to webtoons." The judges added, "In particular, its distinctive character portrayals and playful direction strike a perfect balance, proving the limitless potential for K-webtoons to expand globally."

Meanwhile, the excellence award went to 'Penholder' by author 'Lee Eun-jae', a school sports series that dynamically depicts young people's growth through table tennis. The new artist award went to 'Osaka Fantasy Line' by author 'Hyeo Na-hyun', which offers an in-depth look at the joys and sorrows of a Korean boy living in Japan against the backdrop of Osaka in 1968, drawing attention from critics.

The ceremony, which has drawn widespread attention across the comics industry, will be held during the opening ceremony of the '29th Bucheon International Comics Festival' on the 18th. On the following day, the 19th, authors 'Lee Hyun-min', 'Kim Hyun-soo' and 'Moon Baek-kyung—key figures behind the grand-prize winner—will join popular-culture critic Rainer for an in-depth 'conversation' about how the work came to be and the future of the webtoon industry.
