A grand opening begins that could change the landscape of next-generation K-webtoons

A new project to discover a fresh masterpiece—meant to drive the future of K-webtoons, which have taken over the global content market—is now in motion. ‘Korea Manhwa & Contents Agency’ announced on the 15th that it will hold ‘The 24th Republic of Korea Creative Comics Contest’ to find original talent that will lead the next generation of the webtoon ecosystem.

This contest offers an unconventional stage for anyone 18 or older to throw their hat in the ring, with no distinction between established creators and newcomers. To respect creators’ boundless imagination, there are no restrictions on a work’s materials or themes. The requirement is that entries must be rated as ‘Available for viewing by all ages’, and资格 is strictly limited to ‘pure original works’ with no official serial publication on other platforms or any publishing history.

The judging process will be sharper and more transparent than ever. Only eight final prize-winning works will survive the fierce competition. The total prize money is an impressive ‘70 million won’. In particular, the single grand prize winner—the highest honor—will receive a ‘Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award’ title and also a ‘20 million won’ prize, which is expected to become a solid steppingstone for aspiring creators.

The die has been cast. Submissions are accepted through official channels from midnight on Aug. 25 to 3 p.m. on Sept. 22. This will be far more than just a contest; it will serve as the most certain ‘launchpad for stardom’ for webtoon hopefuls who want to prove their worldview to the public.
