[Sung Chan-eol's Comics] 「Kindergarten WARS」 Turns Body Count Into Bizarre Rom-Com Fun

I'm obsessed with subculture. If a story or character feels fresh—whether in film, webtoons, games, comics, or animation—I check it out. Comics opened the world of fandom to me, and now I'm a kid-at-heart adult who reads paper volumes as e-books and webtoons on my phone. But it's less fun alone. I write [Sung Chan-eol's Comics] to share what’s more enjoyable experienced together, from the perspective of an enthusiastic generalist.

If someone asked me to sum up this comic, I'd probably hesitate and finally say, "It's fun." It is fun. But it's not easy to explain. When I try to list impressions I come up with words that don't normally go together—funny, sweet, scary, brutal—so it's hard to convey. If you're wondering just what kind of comic this is, I'll start with the title: 「Kindergarten WARS」.

You Chiba has been serializing 「Kindergarten WARS」 since 2023, and despite what the title might suggest, it's not an innocent tale. 「Kindergarten WARS」 follows Rita, a genius killer once known as "the Witch," as she serves as a special-duty teacher at the Black Kindergarten attended by the children of famous figures. In this world, dangerous criminals are assigned to protect those children instead of being imprisoned. Assigning criminals to work as kindergarten teachers sounds risky, and yet because so many outside forces are targeting the kids, there are—fortunately(?)—no internal betrayals or power struggles. Those special teachers are, in their own way, surprisingly sincere.

By design, 「Kindergarten WARS」 pairs two incongruous elements—"kindergarten" and "criminals"—and leans shamelessly into comedy. For example, Rita dreams of finding her lifelong love, so even when facing someone who has targeted the children, if the person is handsome she quizzes them to see whether they meet her tastes. A target who has a gun pointed at them and gives an honest answer that turns out to be the exact opposite of Rita's preference will often be shot and killed on the spot. On paper that sounds bleak, but 「Kindergarten WARS」 exaggerates the situation into something gleefully entertaining. After all, whoever dies is someone trying to harm the kids, right? Then again, Rita is a bad person too... Blurring those subtle lines between good and evil, between morality and immorality, is part of 「Kindergarten WARS」's charm.

If the first layer is comedy, the next is a clear romantic thread. Maybe working in a job where your life is constantly at risk produces a kind of heightened emotionality. Rita, searching for her ideal partner, gradually moves beyond a senior-junior dynamic with the consummate con man Doug; similarly, each character has a romance arc of their own. Luke, a former police officer, hides a love of pure romance manga behind his stoic expression. Yoshiteru and Silvia confess and are rejected every time they see each other. By emphasizing comedy and romantic-comedy beats, 「Kindergarten WARS」 invites readers to savor a premise that could otherwise look gruesome in a lighter key.

「Kindergarten WARS」 It's a comedy, but people are still getting killed.

That said, beneath the playful presentation 「Kindergarten WARS」 reveals a cold world. Whether it's groups willing to exploit children for profit or the special teachers who protect them, everyone is criminal in their own way. The special teachers who trade quips and laughter eventually confront their pasts and old enmities as the story moves forward. From there, the tone flips as battles become evenly matched and the teachers have to fight for their lives to protect themselves, their comrades and the children. Those sequences deliver surreal action worthy of a superpowered battle manga, providing the thrill of action while the characters' backstories prevent the work from remaining a simple comedy and leave a deeper emotional aftertaste.

In some respects this flamboyant genre display might feel frivolous. Some readers may think it should have been serious from the start, or else gone even further in its excess. It can look messy. But this tightrope walk between genres is 「Kindergarten WARS」's appeal. Turning brutal situations into comedy and elevating wrenching pasts through exaggerated action is exactly the kind of thing the comics medium can do well—using exaggerated, unrealistic expression to land something emotionally real.

As of now, 「Kindergarten WARS」 has been officially published through Volume 16 and the story is nearing its end (the author also mentioned on social media that this is the final arc). It's a good time to catch up: an anime adaptation is set to air in April 2027. If you're tired of the serious shonen staples and isekai dominating the comics world, I recommend enjoying 「Kindergarten WARS」, which blends romance, comedy, action, and noir. There's also a spin-off, 「Kindergarten WARS LUKE」, so if you like the main story don't forget to check it out. (If you read the physical volumes, be sure to remove the dust jacket to see the inner cover.)
