〈The Odyssey〉 has gained momentum after becoming the fastest release of the year to surpass 8 million viewers and outperforming the pace of previous 10 million-viewer hits.
Fastest 8 million milestone of the year Released Aug. 5, 〈The Odyssey〉 held the No. 1 spot at the box office for 26 consecutive days, according to figures from the Korean Film Council's integrated computer network as of Aug. 31. The film not only dominated the box office after its release but also held the top spot over its fourth weekend, from Aug. 28 to 30, setting a major record as the first film to lead the overall weekend box office for four consecutive weeks. It was the third domestic release this year, after 〈The Man Who Lives with the King〉 and 〈The Colony〉, to top the overall weekend box office for four straight weeks — and the first foreign film to do so.
Record-setting draw puts 10 million within reach The possibility of 〈The Odyssey〉 surpassing 10 million viewers grew significantly after last weekend. The film drew 1,058,636 viewers over its fourth weekend, far exceeding not only Christopher Nolan's 〈Interstellar〉 but also recent 10 million-viewer hits such as 〈Exhuma〉 and 〈The Roundup: Punishment〉. With the film still ranked No. 1 in presales as of Aug. 31, surpassing 10 million viewers appears to be only a matter of time.
Christopher Nolan's epic vision Based on Homer's epic 「The Odyssey」, 〈The Odyssey〉 follows Odysseus, king of Ithaca, on his 20-year journey and explores the reality faced by those around him during his absence. The new film from director Christopher Nolan stars Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Tom Holland and Zendaya.
