Global K-drama production company Studio Dragon and webtoon production company Jaedam Media have entered into a drama planning and development contract for the popular webtoon ‘High School Girl Queen’, marking the beginning of their collaboration. This project aims to diversify its IP (intellectual property) into various genres such as film and animation, beyond just a simple drama adaptation, drawing significant attention from the industry.
The reincarnation of a Joseon queen as a modern high school girl… Reborn as a ‘Cider Action’ drama
Serialized on Naver Webtoon, ‘High School Girl Queen’ (written by Criti/illustrated by Nehae) tells the story of the greatest swordsman of Joseon, Queen ‘Kim Cheong-ha’, who reincarnates as modern high school girl ‘Park Da-jin’. It provides a thrilling catharsis by punishing school bullies with Joseon martial arts, securing a solid fan base.
Studio Dragon plans to enhance the romance elements connecting the past and present while preserving the original work's intense action, developing it into a long drama. In particular, the synergy is expected to be maximized as Jaedam Media, which has numerous successful adaptations such as 〈Weak Hero〉 and 〈Youth Blossom〉, combines its original IP with Studio Dragon's production capabilities.
Simultaneous IP expansion from the planning stage… A new strategy for the content market
The most significant feature of this project is that it breaks away from the traditional method of proceeding with follow-up work after confirming the drama's success, and instead develops with an eye toward comprehensive content expansion, including film and animation, from the planning stage.
A representative from Studio Dragon stated, “We plan to rapidly develop various video genres simultaneously based on popular webtoon one source.” Jaedam Media's CEO Hwang Nam-yong also expressed optimism that this collaboration will allow for a richer presentation of the original work's universe and characters.
