A Sports Film That Caught Cannes’ Attention! Released April 22: ‘The Last Baseball Game’

Follows two amateur baseball teams in the suburbs as they play their final game.

〈The Last Baseball Game〉(Eephus) is a film that made its debut as an official selection of the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival, and it marks the feature directorial debut of newcomer director Carson Lund. Departing from the conventions of traditional sports films, the movie drew attention from critics abroad with a gaze focused not on the game itself, but on the traditions and the time that are slowly disappearing.

〈The Last Baseball Game〉 is a film that follows two amateur baseball teams in the suburbs as they play their final match. The ballpark where they play is set to be demolished soon, and every player knows that this game will be their last. The match runs far longer than expected, and the innings stretch into the night. Even in the darkness, the players keep going—like a single “ritual”—and instead of building suspense toward winning or losing or delivering dramatic incidents, the film calmly accumulates the time the characters spend together through their small talk, silences, and a game that seems like it will end but never really does.

Carson Lund said about this work, “Baseball is a kind of ritual formed between particular places and the people in them,” adding, “Within it alone exist the bonds and identities that are created.” He continued, “Baseball is a sport without a fixed allotted time. It creates its own pace and flow, carries a unique rhythm in every game, and the structure—where moments that erupt unexpectedly repeat amid waiting and stillness—also resembles our lives.” In this way, the director sees baseball not merely as a game, but as an experience in which a particular time and relationships come to form. He captured the rhythm and sensations flowing within it on screen. The poster and trailer unveiled this time also convey the film’s mood just as much as—or more than—the tension of the game itself, capturing the texture of air and time that moves between the characters. Through the game that seems like it will never end and the moments that continue within it, the film will present audiences with a fresh kind of sports movie.
