Director Park Hoon-jung’s New Film “Sad Tropics” Wins Silver Raven at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival

Director Park Hoon-jung’s new film, “Sad Tropics,” has won the Jury Special Award, the “Silver Raven,” at the 44th Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, one of the world’s top three fantastic film festivals.

At the Brussels festival—known alongside the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival and the Fantasporto International Film Festival as one of the world’s three major fantastic film festivals—“Sad Tropics” is the only Korean title invited to the International Competition this year. Breaking through fierce competition and taking home the Silver Raven (Jury Special Award), the film once again proves on the world stage the distinctive genre thrill of director Park Hoon-jung and the strength of K-genre storytelling.

Action noir of revenge for blood shed by a killer organization This film is an action noir depicting the story of the children belonging to the killer organization “Sad Tropics,” raised by Sa-bu, the absolute ruler of the tropical rainforest. It captures a chain of events set in motion when the children, through a case that shakes their very existence, begin to doubt one another and vow revenge for spilled blood. Actor Myung-min Kim plays Sa-bu, the absolute ruler of the tropical rainforest. Joining the cast are Shin-young Lee, from “Rebound,” and Yu-rim Park, from “Drive My Car,” creating a powerful acting ensemble.

Invitations to major overseas film festivals and a domestic release The overseas love calls for “Sad Tropics” are not the first this time. After it was officially invited earlier last October to the Orbita Section of the 58th Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival, the film has now garnered attention worldwide once again, clinching this win at the Brussels festival as well. “Sad Tropics,” which has already been recognized on the world stage for its original style and immersive storytelling, is currently in final post-production, and is expected to meet domestic audiences as soon as the work is completed.
