Ahead of 'Africa Day' on the 25th and the 'Korea-Africa Foreign Ministers’ Meeting' on June 1, a cultural festival spotlighting the diverse charms of Africa has kicked off. In cooperation with the Busan Cinema Center, the Korea-Africa Foundation will hold the '8th Africa Film Festival' in Busan, Seoul, and Jeonju from May 21 to June 14. A total of 16 standout works from 15 countries, including Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa, have been selected for audiences. The opening ceremony on the 21st at Busan Cinema Center will mark a dazzling start with television personality 'Kim Kyungsik' as the host and a celebratory performance by singer 'Hareem'. The event is expected to serve as a key bridge to strengthen diplomatic ties beyond cultural exchange between the two countries.

This year’s opening film, 'Kipkemboi'—Kenya’s latest buzzworthy production—has been selected, drawing significant attention. Directed by Nigerian-Canadian 'Charles Uwagbai', the film depicts in depth how a math prodigy from rural Kenya takes on Wall Street, the world’s financial hub, using cutting-edge technology as a weapon. The movie has been praised for vividly capturing Kenya’s explosive digital innovation—often dubbed 'Silicon Savanna'—as well as the dynamism of the younger generation. At the 2024 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), it won the award for Best Supporting Actress, proving its overwhelming artistic merit on the international stage.

Behind Kenya’s film taking center stage as the opening feature lies the close cooperation between Korea and Kenya, which has recently been rapidly strengthening. Kenya is a key partner in the Republic of Korea’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) and a frontrunner in the digital economy transition. At the opening ceremony, 'Emmy Jerono Kipsoi', the Kenyan ambassador to Korea, and director 'Charles Uwagbai' will attend in person, adding further authority to the event. During the screening period, in-depth side events such as audience Q&A sessions with the director and cast (GV) and professional talk concerts will continue. Detailed schedules can be found on the official website of the Korea-Africa Foundation.
