4K Remastered ‘Kairo’ Still Unveiled! Y2K-Era Horror Thriller from Master Suspense Director Kiyoshi Kurosawa

“Ryōsuke,” who discovers a strange website, and “Michi,” who witnesses the deaths of his companions—together, the two films capture the collapse of the world they face and a massive death circuit in the end-of-the-century horror thriller 〈LANGLE_BRACKET_BRACKET〉Kairo〈RANGLE_BRACKET_BRACKET〉. The production has released 12 press stills. Alongside 〈LANGLE_BRACKET_BRACKET〉Cure〈RANGLE_BRACKET_BRACKET〉 and 〈LANGLE_BRACKET_BRACKET〉Sakebi〈RANGLE_BRACKET_BRACKET〉, 〈LANGLE_BRACKET_BRACKET〉Kairo〈RANGLE_BRACKET_BRACKET〉 is regarded as one of Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s horror trilogy. When it first came out in 2001, it shocked critics and audiences alike by presenting a new dimension of fear—one that humanity had never experienced before—using the internet, then an unknown frontier.

The 12 press stills unveiled draw attention with their signature chilly and eerie atmosphere. The sepia-toned palette that dominates the stills heightens the end-of-century, apocalyptic mood. The fashion and hairstyles of the characters, imbued with full-on Y2K sensibility, along with long-forgotten items like landline phones, CRT televisions, and older monitors, trigger a strange sense of nostalgia while also creating a sense of unease.

In addition, the unidentified black shadow faintly left on the wall, the man’s figure within the monitor, and grotesque silhouettes standing motionless in the corner of a room or wearing black plastic bags over their heads spark curiosity about the suspense that will be conveyed beyond the screen. In particular, under a dark, heavy sky, Koji Yakusho’s hollow-eyed gaze projects overwhelming presence, further raising anticipation for the film.
