Global rookies head for Japan, offering a fresh take on Y2K

A super rookie poised to shake up the global music market is setting out to conquer Japan’s island chain. The multitracial girl group UNIS, a talent powerhouse created by the audition program “Universe Ticket,” will release its first Japanese mini album, “UNIS SPARKLE!” (UNI Sparkle!), on the 31st, sending out the opening signal for a full-scale push across Asia.

Its agency, F&F Entertainment, pulled out all the stops by pre-releasing the audio for the title track “GIMI-SAMA” (GimmeSummer) at midnight on the 17th, ahead of the official album release. The move is seen as a two-pronged strategy: quenching global fandom’s thirst in advance while also maximizing public expectations for the group’s debut Japanese outing.

This new release, “UNIS SPARKLE!”, is a standout work that reinterprets the Japanese pop culture of “Y2K sensibility,” which has solidified itself as a global mega trend, through UNIS’s own distinctive musical spectrum. In particular, the pre-released “GIMI-SAMA” is a well-made summer song that captures the everyday life of fresh-faced girls balancing between love and friendship, set to bright, upbeat sound—drawing spotlight from both the public and music critics alike.

The group burst onto the music scene in March 2024 like a bolt of lightning, and since right after its debut it has proved its strong live skills and unmistakable performances, building a formidable core fandom worldwide. Its push into Japan is expected to be a decisive turning point for UNIS to firmly establish itself as the “next-generation K-pop standard,” beyond a mere expansion of its activity scope.
