P-NATION, PSY’s agency, said Friday that the music video for PSY’s global hit song "Gangnam Style" has become the first K-pop act to surpass 6 billion views on YouTube.
The music video for "Gangnam Style," released on July 15, 2012, cleared 6 billion views for the first time in the 14 years since—surpassing 6 billion views on July 17, 2026, in the afternoon. After passing 5 billion views on Dec. 30, 2023, the video added another 1 billion views in 2 years and 7 months, proving it is still firmly setting milestones in K-pop history. Backed by comedic lyrics, eye-catching horse-riding dance moves and wry, humorous visuals, the music video sparked a global craze. It also became the first music video in YouTube history to surpass 1 billion views in December 2012, and it helped kick off the K-pop boom as it logged a run of seven straight weeks at No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard main single chart "Hot 100."
P-NATION said, "This is a symbolic record in K-pop history and an example that shows the staying power of content that is consistently loved across borders and generations." PSY previously added meaning to the "Gangnam Style" YouTube phenomenon, saying, "YouTube changed the landscape of the Hallyu wave, and "Gangnam Style" was the first case where YouTube was utilized well."
Meanwhile, PSY, who is currently meeting fans under the banner of "PSY 흠뻑쇼 서머스웨그 2026," directly celebrated the record at a performance in Seoul Grand Park (Gwacheon). Wearing the light-blue jacket and black bow tie he had when filming the "Gangnam Style" music video on stage, PSY held an event with the audience to mark the milestone of surpassing 6 billion views. He said, "(I will upload the stage video) on YouTube as a 6 billion-view thank-you video," drawing a wave of cheers from fans.
