Six years after joining Britain’s royal family, Duchess of Sussex signals possible return to her former career
Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, is exploring a return to acting six years after she put her career on hold in 2018 when she left the British royal family. The project widely seen as the leading contender for her comeback is the third season of Netflix’s original series ‘The Gentlemen’.
Major outlets including CNN reported on the 21st, local time, that Meghan Markle has received an offer to join the series from acclaimed director Guy Ritchie and is discussing the details. ‘The Gentlemen’ is a black-comedy gangster series about a power struggle between Britain’s upper-class aristocracy and an underground drug-trafficking organization. It became a hit with both critics and audiences.
The casting has not yet been finalized. Deadline, the U.S. entertainment outlet that first reported the news, cautioned that “the discussions are still only at an early stage, and the specific role remains under wraps.” Netflix also has yet to give final approval to production of Season 3.
The reports of Markle’s possible return have drawn intense global attention because they coincide with the planned return to Britain of Prince Harry and his family. Australia’s news.com.au suggested that the script Markle received may have played a decisive role in the couple’s decision to travel to Britain later this month. The couple plans to stay at a private residence outside London, and both children are understood to have been enrolled at a prestigious local school ahead of the start of the new school year in September.
A former Hollywood actress, Meghan Markle rose to stardom through the popular legal drama ‘Suits’ but left the screen when she joined Britain’s royal family in 2018. At the time, she left a lingering hint by saying, “I’m not giving up anything forever.” With ‘Suits’ recently enjoying a global resurgence on Netflix, joining ‘The Gentlemen’ could provide a powerful springboard for her high-profile return to Hollywood.
