aespa swept six awards at a ceremony hosted by China’s largest music-streaming platform, “Tencent Music”, completely commanding Hong Kong’s 50,000-seat Kai Tak Stadium. K-pop artists hold their own alongside global pop stars

The “2026 TME Live International Music Awards” (hereafter “2026 TIMA”), held over two days beginning on the 22nd at Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Stadium, became a showcase for leading K-pop groups. The ceremony, newly launched by Tencent Music Entertainment Group, also featured global pop star “Charlie Puth”, cementing its standing as an international music festival.

SM Entertainment makes commanding showing with most awards for a single agency

The standout performer was undoubtedly “aespa”. The group swept a total of six trophies, including Best Overseas Girl Group of the Year, earning the distinction of winning the most awards. “SM Entertainment” led the charge, with eight acts—including “Super Junior”, “Taeyeon”, “NCT’s Taeyong” and “RIIZE”—taking the stage and sweeping the major categories.

K-pop’s broad-based advance, spanning both boy groups and girl groups, was also striking. “Stray Kids” won Overseas Group of the Year, while “IVE” took the Overseas Popular Group Award, demonstrating the strength of their global fan bases. “TOMORROW X TOGETHER” won Best Overseas Boy Group of the Year, followed by virtual idols “PLAVE”, who took the Overseas Popular Performance Award and marked a new milestone for K-pop by combining technology and entertainment.

A launch signal for expansion across China and a key foothold in Chinese-speaking markets

Major South Korean music agencies view “2026 TIMA” as a strategic base for targeting Chinese-speaking markets. A senior executive at a major entertainment agency said, “With offline activities across Chinese-speaking markets recently limited, a massive stadium stage with a 50,000-seat capacity offers a rare opportunity to build a solid foundation for expansion across China.” Some in the music industry broadly believe that, given “Tencent Music’s” immense control over its platform, simply attending the ceremony amounts to a guarantee of successful market entry, regardless of whether an artist wins an award.
