A cult icon has returned to his own star. On 2026-08-25, actor Tim Curry died. From the stage to film, television and animation, he worked across every medium and used his distinctive gifts to fully inhabit characters, leaving a lasting impression on many. Some of those roles were so widely beloved that even people who didn’t know the name "Tim Curry" would see his face and say, "Oh, that guy!" 〈Home Alone 2: Lost in New York〉 — Hector, the hotel manager

Much of the coverage of Curry’s death referred to him simply as the "hotel manager." That’s hardly surprising: the film 〈Home Alone 2: Lost in New York〉, in which he plays the hotel manager Hector, has long been a Christmas favorite in Korea. Kevin (Macaulay Culkin), who was left home alone in the first film, this time ends up alone in New York while his family goes on vacation. Now something of a veteran at being on his own, Kevin uses his wits and checks into the Plaza Hotel, where the manager Hector is played by Tim Curry. Although the burglars from the first film return, it’s Hector—who constantly suspects and keeps an eye on Kevin—who acts as the second film’s distinctive antagonist. Of course, he’s only a villain from Kevin’s perspective; in reality Hector was a careful, capable manager who accurately assessed Kevin’s situation and might well feel unfairly maligned. A standout scene in the second film is when Hector is tricked by Kevin’s prank and carries on a conversation with a TV character—Tim Curry’s sly, playful acting really shines in that moment. Curry later recalled that after appearing in 〈Home Alone 2: Lost in New York〉, children in particular often didn’t know how to react when they saw him.

〈The Rocky Horror Picture Show〉 — Dr. Frank-N-Furter

If Curry is remembered as a cult icon, much of the credit goes to his screen debut, 〈The Rocky Horror Picture Show〉. The film adapts the musical "The Rocky Horror Show" into a picture, following Brad and Janet as they seek shelter from a storm in a gothic mansion. That mansion houses the bizarre Dr. Frank-N-Furter, who is creating a creature named Rocky; when Rocky awakens it upends Brad and Janet’s relationship. The film parodies 《Frankenstein》, a foundational work of science fiction, through a pulpy sci-fi lens and piles on musical numbers and abundant sexual jokes. It set a record with 13 consecutive years of late-night screenings and, together with 〈Eraserhead〉, is regarded as a true cult classic. Although it’s called his screen debut, Curry had been performing the role since the stage production of "The Rocky Horror Show" in 1973, and he used that foundation to create a definitive Dr. Frank‑N‑Furter who immediately became one of cinema’s unforgettable characters. Curry continued his stage work in productions such as "Hair" and "Amadeus," and his performance in "Amadeus" earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play. While preparing the role he initially practiced a German accent to fit the name, but one day on a bus he heard an upper‑class British English spoken by a woman and used that to complete the character. He tried many shoes but couldn’t find the right feel, so he had special high heels made for the role. Because of his fondness for the piece, Curry later appeared in the 2016 TV remake as the film’s narrator and as a criminologist.

〈It (1990 TV miniseries)〉 Pennywise

For many Korean internet users, this character might now provoke laughter, but until the 1990s Pennywise was sheer terror. The TV miniseries 〈It (1990 TV miniseries)〉, adapted from Stephen King’s 「It」, follows seven friends who confront a clown named Pennywise that appears every few decades. Produced before the two-part theatrical adaptations released in 2017 and 2019, the 1990 adaptation features Tim Curry as Pennywise and left a powerful impression. Though heavy makeup made him hard to recognize, Curry later recalled it was an opportunity that gave him tremendous freedom. His performance was so frightening that none of the young lead actors dared approach him. During filming of the sewer opening scene, the actor playing Georgie got scared and said Curry was too frightening, so Curry had to tell him he wasn’t going to hurt him. Meanwhile, background child actors, who saw Curry in makeup singing with them during long waits, thought he really was a clown. Pennywise’s sudden surge in popularity in South Korea came, ironically, from the stock market: someone likened the clown to market behavior with the phrase "just die and it’s over," which went viral and made the clown a symbol of market crashes. As Tim Curry’s Pennywise was rediscovered, the phrase began to be used like a catchphrase and the 1990 production received renewed attention.

Curry remained active as both an actor and voice actor into the 2010s, but after suffering a stroke in 2012 he experienced paralysis in his lower body and memory decline, making it difficult to continue performing. He nevertheless continued to work as a voice actor where he could still act. Tim Curry, who once said he would accept death as "the privilege of disappearing from this place," has returned to the Transylvanian galaxy; the space he leaves behind will continue to be filled by memories of his performances and characters.
