Legendary witches return to the screen, facing a deadly family curse
The legendary fantasy film ‘Practical Magic’ (1998), starring Hollywood heavyweights ‘Sandra Bullock’ and ‘Nicole Kidman’, returns to theaters after 28 years of silence.
‘Practical Magic: A New Chapter’, set to open on the 9th, is a sequel that carries on the original’s legacy. The return of the two acclaimed actresses as the ‘witch sisters’ alone has movie fans around the world watching closely as they once again deliver a perfectly matched performance.
The film follows a captivating ‘fantasy romance’ as Sally (played by Sandra Bullock) and Gillian (played by Nicole Kidman) of the ‘Owens family’ confront the brutal ‘curse’ etched into their bloodline.
The women inherit mysterious ‘magical powers’ through the maternal line, generation after generation, making them objects of both public awe and fear. The women of the family bear a deadly curse: Any man who truly loves them will meet a tragic fate.
The story opens with Sally and Gillian still struggling under the weight of destiny. Desperate to keep the tragedy from passing to her beloved daughters, Sally seals away her magic completely. As a result, Kylie (played by Joey King), who has grown into a Harvard student, and Antonia (played by Maisie Williams), now a doctor, lead ordinary lives without any knowledge of the family secret.

A new generation of witches unites, blending playful humor with heartfelt emotion
But the wheel of fate turns cruelly. Soon after Kylie falls deeply in love with her boyfriend, Gideon (played by Xolo Maridueña), he is involved in an unexpected accident, bringing the ‘family legacy’ to the surface. Confronted with the truth, Kylie embarks on a difficult journey to break the curse, guided by the ‘secret book’ left behind by her late maternal grandmother.
Reunited after 28 years, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman deliver lively back-and-forth banter born of their contrasting personalities as they bumble their way through a quest to save Kylie. Rather than relying on flashy computer-generated imagery or overwhelming spectacle, the film focuses on how women branded as witches overcome adversity through steadfast ‘solidarity.’
The film is directed by Danish filmmaker ‘Susanne Bier,’ who demonstrated her exceptional command of the craft with ‘Love, Again!’ (2013) and ‘Bird Box’ (2018), adding greater narrative depth and warmth to the story.
