Lee Chang-dong’s film 〈Possible Love〉 wrapped up a successful U.S. run in New York, Los Angeles (LA) and San Francisco. Netflix on the 6th released details of its North American promotional events, which drew enthusiastic praise from local media and audiences.
The U.S. schedule began in New York with a 4K special screening of Lee Chang-dong’s signature film 〈Peppermint Candy〉 at the Paris Theater. The official screening of 〈Possible Love〉, which was selected for the Main Slate section of the 64th New York Film Festival and held at Alice Tully Hall, sold out all 1,085 seats. At the post-screening Q&A, Lee Chang-dong and cast members Jeon Do-yeon, Seol Kyung-gu, Jo In-sung and Jo Yeo-jeong engaged in an in-depth discussion about labor, identity and the characters’ psychological ethics.
The excitement continued in LA and San Francisco. Screenings for members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the National Board of Review (NBR) drew praise from local critics and industry professionals. At the Mill Valley Film Festival in San Francisco, Lee Chang-dong became the first Korean to receive the festival’s directing honor, the Auteur Award.
〈Possible Love〉 follows two couples — a laid-off worker and his wife, and a documentary filmmaker and her husband — who come together to make a documentary and confront their divergent lives and hidden desires.
