Set against the backdrop of the birth of erotic films that swept through Korea in the 1980s, the Netflix series 〈Emma〉 tells the story of top star ‘Hee-ran’ bravely confronting the dark realities hidden behind the glamorous spotlight, alongside rookie actress ‘Joo-ae’. The series has caught attention by releasing character stills of four characters.

The released character stills capture the diverse personalities surrounding the production of the hot 80s film ‘The Wife of the Horse’. First, the still of Jeong Hee-ran (Lee Ha-nee), perfectly adorned with glamorous costumes, hairstyles, and accessories, exudes the aura of a top actress who dominated the screens of that era. Hee-ran is a star who won the Best Actress award at an international film festival and declared, ‘I will no longer perform in revealing roles,’ thus rejecting the lead casting for ‘The Wife of the Horse’. Lee Ha-nee shared about her character, “I wanted her to exude a solid elegance, and even when just standing, I hoped her charisma would shine through.”

The still featuring rookie actress Shin Joo-ae (Bang Hyo-rin), who was suddenly cast as the lead in ‘The Wife of the Horse’, also raises curiosity with her unexpected charm. Joo-ae has no acting experience but was cast as ‘Emma’ with her unique color, making one wonder about her journey from her unadorned, simple appearance to confidently riding in front of the vast sea as ‘Emma’. Bang Hyo-rin described her character, saying, “Joo-ae is very bold and confident, with clear thoughts and beliefs,” raising expectations for the daring charm she has created as ‘Joo-ae’.

The representative of the production company of ‘The Wife of the Horse’, Gu Jung-ho (Jin Sun-kyu), is a figure who has succeeded in the fiercely competitive Chungmuro film industry by any means necessary. Just from his gaze and expression in the still, one can feel his ambition and desire for money and box office success. Jin Sun-kyu defines Gu Jung-ho as “someone who is full of love for movies, but whose methods are somewhat focused on ‘money’,” raising anticipation for another acting transformation.

Meanwhile, rookie director Kwak In-woo (Jo Hyun-cheol), who is making his directorial debut with ‘The Wife of the Horse’, is a person driven by a desire to present a film filled with his own vision and philosophy. His appearance writing the script for his debut work ‘The Wife of the Horse’ among piles of manuscripts raises curiosity about whether he can successfully complete this project. Jo Hyun-cheol shared about his character, saying, “Kwak In-woo is someone who is always rejected, very timid, yet has big ambitions, leading to frustration and suffering,” adding interest to his unique portrayal of In-woo. The sensational alliance of two women trying to make a mark in the Chungmuro stories surrounding the filming of the sensational work ‘The Wife of the Horse’ from the 1980s is humorously and cleverly depicted in 〈Emma〉, which will be released on Netflix on August 22 (Friday).
