The Complicated Friendship Story of Eun-jung and Sang-yeon
〈You and Everything Else〉 is a story that faces all the moments of two friends, Eun-jung and Sang-yeon, who love, envy, and hate each other at every moment, becoming entangled throughout their lives. The copy “Between Admiration and Resentment” on the teaser poster succinctly expresses the numerous emotions they share, stimulating the audience's curiosity. The image of the two friends standing in front of a blurred photo suggests how their relationship affects each of their lives.
The Emotions of Friends Connecting the Past and Present
The trailer released alongside shows the conflict between ‘Sang-yeon’, who hurls harsh words at ‘Eun-jung’, and ‘Eun-jung’, who retorts with resentful words to ‘Sang-yeon’. It continues to depict how the two, who have spent a long time together since childhood, experience two breakups and eventually drift apart, raising curiosity about the stories of those standing between resentment and admiration. ‘Eun-jung’ says, “When ‘Sang-yeon’ is next to me, everything I have feels ordinary and insignificant,” while ‘Sang-yeon’ reflects, “That was when I sensed I could never win against this kid forever.” The story of the two friends, who exchanged numerous emotions, sometimes admiration and sometimes inferiority, details feelings that anyone has likely felt towards a friend at least once, evoking empathy. ‘Eun-jung’s line, “I want to know ‘Sang-yeon’s’ true feelings at least once,” illustrates the situation of the two who were closer than anyone but could not deeply understand each other's feelings, leading to misunderstandings and their drifting apart, amplifying curiosity about what conclusion their friendship will face.
Director Jo Young-min's Message
Director Jo Young-min, who is in charge of directing, conveyed, “I thought ‘companionship’ is the color of this work. Following the lives of ‘Eun-jung’ and ‘Sang-yeon’, I believe we will encounter our past selves, think of friends, and touch upon our lives or the lives around us. I think it will allow us to understand, forgive someone, and get to know ourselves.” This heightened expectations for the special companionship that the two friends will show.
