The largest independent film festival in the country, the Seoul Independent Film Festival, will open its glamorous curtain on the 27th and begin a 9-day journey. This year marks the 51st edition of the festival, which promises a richer and more diverse feast of independent films than ever before.

The organizing committee of the Seoul Independent Film Festival held a press conference on the 5th at Megabox Art Nine in Dongjak-gu, Seoul, to detail the main screenings and programs of the 51st festival. A total of 1,805 works were submitted to this year's festival, an increase of 101 from last year, setting a new record. Among these, 127 carefully selected works are waiting to meet the audience during the festival period.

The festival organizers analyzed that "as the production environment has become difficult after the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increase in the influx of talent into the independent film sector, leading to more active small-scale creative activities," and stated, "Independent films are emerging as a new focal point amid changes in the film industry structure."

The slogan for this year's festival is 'We Need You for the Film to Come,' which conveys the meaning that independent films are completed through communication with the audience.

The opening film has been selected as the collaborative work of directors Kim Tae-yang, Son Gu-yong, Lee Mi-rang, and Lee Jong-soo, 〈To You Who Are Unrelated〉. This work is based on the imagination of the lost final scene of the film 〈The Widow〉 by Park Nam-ok, the first female director in Korean cinema, and is a compilation of three short films directed by the four directors, each incorporating their own personalities.

Moon Eun-young, the chairperson of the Seoul Independent Film Festival, expressed her expectations, stating, "This provocative and experimental opening film will provide the audience with a much more intense cinematic experience than before."

In the main competition section, after a fierce preliminary selection, 12 feature films and 35 short films will compete for the Grand Prize, Best Feature Film, and Excellent Film Award.

The jury for the feature film competition includes programmer Nam Dong-cheol, director Lee Eon-hee, and actress Jeon Yeo-bin, while the short film competition will be judged by Kim Mi-young, Park Kyung-geun, and director Yoo Jin-mok, who plan to conduct fair and in-depth evaluations.

The audition program 'Actor Project - 60-Second Monologue Festival,' which discovers new faces in the independent film sector, is celebrating its 8th edition this year. Among a record number of 7,757 applicants, 24 have earned the honor of advancing to the finals, where the final performances and evaluations will take place at CGV Cheongdam Cine City on the 1st of next month.

A new short film production support project sponsored by actor Byun Woo-seok has been established to empower independent film creators. Kim Dong-hyun, the program committee chair of the Seoul Independent Film Festival, predicted, "It is significant that the actor (Byun Woo-seok) participates in a new way rather than in his existing role, and it will be a positive signal supporting independent films."

This film festival will take place from November 27 to December 5 at CGV Apgujeong and CGV Cheongdam Cine City.
