The Korean Film Council, chaired by Han Sang-joon, and the Korean Academy of Film Arts, led by director Cho Keun-sik and known as KAFA, will run the ‘Airport Cinema Club’ from Sept. 22 through Oct. 19 in the domestic terminal’s third-floor general waiting area at Gimhae International Airport. The event was organized as part of Korea Airports Corp.’s cultural programming connecting culture hub airports with local communities.
The ‘Airport Cinema Club’ will screen 25 early short films by established and emerging directors who graduated from KAFA, including Bong Joon-ho, Jang Joon-hwan, Choi Dong-hoon and Lee Ok-seop. The program was designed to give domestic and international visitors passing through Gimhae International Airport, a gateway to the region, an accessible introduction to Korean cinema during the 31st Busan International Film Festival, which opens Oct. 6.
The space will feature three programs. ‘The 10-Minute Cinema’ is a standing bar-style area where short films will play on three large monitors. ‘Cinema Storage’ will display art books and screenplays, while the ‘Cinema Card’ zone will provide work descriptions and QR codes for viewing the films on mobile devices. Anyone visiting the airport can watch the films free of charge, whether or not they are catching a flight.
“This Airport Cinema Club is an opportunity for KAFA to share with audiences the growth of creators it has nurtured over the past 20 years,” KAFA director Cho Keun-sik said. “I hope it will help people become more familiar with Korean films in the open setting of an airport and expand opportunities to enjoy culture.”
