The New Wave of Japanese Cinema 'Oda Kaori' to Visit Korea on the 28th... 'Underground Trilogy' Special Screening Held

The time has come to meet director Oda Kaori's previous works again in theaters as her visit to Korea has been confirmed.

Japanese director Oda Kaori will visit Korea on January 28. Along with her visit, the screening of her previous works symbolizing her artistic identity, the 'Underground Trilogy', and her new work that includes the Fukushima workshop process under the master Bela Tarr will be held.

Oda Kaori, a first-generation graduate of the film school 'Film Factory' established by the recently deceased Hungarian master Bela Tarr, is gaining global attention as one of the young directors leading a new wave in Japanese cinema, building a unique grammar that captures the unseen through images and sounds beyond conventional narratives.

This special screening, held alongside her visit, will showcase three feature documentaries that have marked Oda Kaori's distinctive style, known as the 'Underground Trilogy'. The new work 〈Underground〉 has been invited to the Forum section of the Berlin International Film Festival. Two additional works will be screened at the Seoul Art Cinema. 〈Noise Says〉 is a work that ambiguously mixes documentary and fiction about Oda Kaori's process of coming out to her family, produced as a 40-minute medium-length film for her graduation from 'Bela Tarr Film Factory'. 〈With Bela Tarr in Fukushima〉 is a work being screened for the first time in Korea, a 180-minute documentary capturing the film production workshop held under Bela Tarr's guidance in Fukushima in 2024. It is a work where the film philosophy discussed by Bela Tarr intersects with the director's perspective on the space of Fukushima. This special screening will be held simultaneously at Art House Momo, CGV Apgujeong, and Seoul Art Cinema starting January 28.
