The 34th feature film by acclaimed director “Hong Sang-soo”, “The Day She Returned,” will officially open in South Korea’s theaters on May 6. Jeonwonsa’s announcement once again brought renewed attention from critics around the world. This black-and-white film portrays, with delicate yet razor-sharp precision, the routine of a single day in the life of actress “Bae Jeong-su”, who returned to independent cinema after more than 10 years away from acting. With “Song Seon-mi” delivering a standout performance, the film builds momentum through her signature depth. Joining forces to further heighten the movie’s artistic density is the so-called “Hong Sang-soo troupe”—including Yoon Hee Cho, Park Mi-so, and Seok Guk Ha.

This new release showcases the director “Hong Sang-soo”’s authorial command, as he personally oversees every stage—from directing and writing to cinematography, editing, and music. In particular, “Kim Min-hee” stepped in as head of production, underscoring a steadfast creative partnership and a highly refined level of completion. Previously, the film also marked a notable milestone by receiving an official invitation to the Panorama section at the 76th “Berlin Film Festival” last February. With this, director “Hong Sang-soo” set a new, unprecedented record in Korean film history: his directing work has been invited to Berlin for seven consecutive years, again cementing his reputation as a world-renowned master.
