After raking in a box-office run-rate topping 22 million dollars in the first weekend of its release in North America, the buzzy film 〈King of Kings〉-crossover spectacle 〈David〉 opens in South Korea on Friday, July 10. Starting with a mother’s song and moving through the showdown with Goliath, the giant the world feared, the film 〈David〉 depicts the story of an ordinary shepherd, David, as he faces the fate of a king. Cineplay editor-in-chief Joo Seong-cheol shares his review after attending the press screening.

Even nonbelievers likely know the story, and it places the showdown between an ordinary shepherd David and the giant Goliath at the center while keeping the journey that follows engaging. It shows the familiar confrontation early on, then expands the narrative in an easy-to-follow way, including David’s inner voice and the conflict with King Saul. The film brings together Phil Cunningham and Berend Dost—who handled producing and writing for 〈The Lion of Judah: Easter Adventure〉(2011)—as co-directors. If 〈The Lion of Judah: Easter Adventure〉 tried to rework the Easter tale with a variety of animal characters, then 〈David〉 borrowed the format of a musical to heighten the viewing appeal. Actor Park Bo-gum, who voices adult David, also handles “Follow the Light,” one of the film’s signature musical numbers. Dialogue acting and singing are both subtly and impressively in sync.
