The return of a maestro after 10 years of silence, facing an acoustic guitar
A living legend of South Korea’s pop music world, singer Kim Gun-mo is coming back to the public after an unusually long stretch of silence lasting 10 years. His agency, Geon-eum Planning, said that at 6 p.m. on the 1st, it will roll out the brand-new track “I Wonder Where I’m Heading,” packed with his deep anguish and reflection.
This new release is the first official output he puts out to the world since the album “50,” released in 2016 to mark his 25th debut anniversary. As the long hiatus has finally been broken, attention from all around the music industry and beyond is converging at once. The newly released song reinterprets the title track of the same name from 1977, originally released as a debut album by singer Jeon Young. While preserving the original’s signature lyrical melodies, it has kept its instrument lineup extremely restrained—boosting Kim Gun-mo’s unmistakable, straightforward vocals to a dramatic peak.
The biggest departure comes in its musical texture. Instead of the Kim Gun-mo at the keyboard that has been etched into the public’s memory, the track offers an unfamiliar scene where he cradles a “acoustic guitar” and sings as if murmuring. Geon-eum Planning said, “It’s a song that I’ve been plucking the guitar strings alone for a long time and repeating to myself countless times,” adding, “It contains fully an ‘autobiographical confession’ about the hard-won time spent healing and comforting my own wounds.”
The original work’s composer, Lee Hyun-seop, and lyricist Lee Kyung-mi, a married couple, also reportedly offered rousing praise for the masterpiece that has been reborn through the maestro’s touch, saying it was “like an unexpected gift.”

“As a cool old gentleman”… continues a nationwide tour to be back with the public
Kim Gun-mo himself also shared his thoughts, saying, “Because this is a song recorded while playing the guitar for the very first time in my life, I hope it becomes a historic turning point that engraves ‘a brand-new Kim Gun-mo’ in the minds of the public.”
He previously announced a dramatic return to the stage for the first time in six years by successfully completing a large nationwide tour linking Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, and Seoul—from September last year through March this year.
With that said, observers are now watching how he will prove the weighty promise he once made to countless audience members, when he vowed, “I’ll become a cute old gentleman who’s grown up in style and keep lingering by your side.” This time, through the new song, attention is focused on just how he will deliver it.
