A genre-film hub that screens the future, completing 30 years of legacy
The Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN), which has led the cutting edge of the world’s genre film scene beyond Asia, opened on the 2nd with an overwhelming scale as it charted its 30th course.
The opening ceremony held at Bucheon Art Center turned, for a second straight year, to director Song Seunghwan, who took the megaphone as executive producer. By bringing the sharp yet forward-looking topic of "Humanoid Robots and the Coexistence of Humans" to the stage, he delivered a massive artistic performance that went beyond a simple film festival.
As if to prove the weighty stature of its 30th anniversary, the special awards ceremony—where stars from around the world’s film industry gathered—was the standout. The Global Icon Award and Fantastic Icon Award went to pan-Asian star Fan Bingbing and Josie Ho, respectively. Meanwhile, Isabelle Huppert, a living legend of contemporary film art, received the Lifetime Achievement Award, lifting the event’s prestige to its peak.

A red carpet dotted with masters and stars, captivating the world beyond Asia
The red carpet that unfolded before the main ceremony was, in every sense, a condensed version of a cinematic spectacle. Leading the lineup, director Lee Joon-ik, who helped drive a renaissance of Korean cinema with "King and the Clown", and other heavyweights from the Korean film world—including Kwak Kyung-taek and Chung Jiyoung—showed their presence in a big way. On top of that, popular actors who dominate the screen, such as Yoo Jaemyung, Lee Sieon, and Kim Minha, made dazzling appearances, boosting the crowd’s excitement to the maximum.
Immediately after the opening ceremony, the opening film "Table: A Storm of Fortune", unveiled at Eouleum Madang at Bucheon City Hall, perfectly grabbed audiences’ senses. The new work from martial-arts master Yuen Wooping, along with the return of action icon Jet Li, delivered the aesthetics of classic martial arts, offering a catharsis worthy of kicking off BIFAN’s 30th anniversary.

A cinematic odyssey of 321 films, with overwhelming curation that breaks boundaries
This festival, running through Dec. 12, brings genre films selected from 50 countries around the world—321 in total—covering a wide range of styles to audiences. In keeping with the milestone number of 30, the gala section’s "Signature" category features 19 new works from masters and global stars.
In particular, the Asia premiere of "Black Lightning" by director Kiyoshi Kurosawa, which sparked heat at the Cannes Film Festival, and "Fat Phil" by director Quentin Dupieux are set to be unveiled, foreshadowing a fierce ticket-buying war among cinephiles. In addition, the special program "Asian Genre Cinema 99", which traces how Korean genre film has evolved over the past 30 years, offers an astonishing experience of revisiting the history of the screen.

The whole city turns into a giant movie theater, kicking off the Fantastic Syndrome
The festival transformed across Bucheon—starting with "Bucheon City Hall"—"Korea Cartoon Museum", "CGV Sopoong", "Lotte Cinema Bucheon", and "Bucheon Art Bunker B39"—into a vast cinema universe. A reasonable ticketing policy of 10,000 won for standard screenings and 20,000 won for late-night screenings is a strong incentive that will allow more people to join in the genre-film celebration.
