Action blockbuster ‘Kim Bu-jang’, which depicts a father’s desperate fight to save his daughter, perfectly stole the attention of Netflix viewers around the world. By holding the top spot for three consecutive weeks in the platform’s non-English show category, it once again proved the overwhelming global reach of Korean content. In particular, a record-making surge unfolded as as many as five K-content titles ranked on Netflix’s global top 10 list.

According to Netflix’s official tally site Tudum, announced on the 22nd, from the 13th to the 19th, ‘Kim Bu-jang’ maintained its No. 1 position in the non-English show category with an astonishing viewing figure of 8.2 million (a value that divides viewing time by the running time). After taking the throne in its second week immediately following its first release on the 26th of last month, it defended the summit for three straight weeks and flexed its formidable box-office pull by entering the top 10 in 73 countries worldwide.

Starring So Ji-sub in the title role, ‘Kim Bu-jang’ is based on the popular webtoon of the same name. The series delivers a weighty story in which a former special agent who hides his identity and lives a normal life charges into the line of fire to rescue a kidnapped blood relative. Even when the work aired as an SBS Fri-Sat drama, it previously led to a blockbuster craze at home, reaching a peak viewership rating of 23.1%.

From ‘Donggung’ to ‘Gas Human,’ K-Creators Break Through Genre Limits

‘Kim Bu-jang’ kicked off the mega-hit run, and Korean works across a variety of genres filled out the non-English show top 10 in a spectacular display. Beyond that, global collaboration results from K-creators are also impressive. The Netflix Japan original ‘Gas Human’, with director Yeon Sang-ho serving as overall producer and screenwriter, ranked No. 9 with 1.6 million views. Meanwhile, in the English-language film category, ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’ rose to No. 6 with 3.4 million views, setting a landmark milestone of entering the top 10 for 57 straight weeks.
