Bram Stoker’s “Dracula”, an enduring classic, is reborn through the filmmaker’s lens as a sweeping “fantasy romance.” The story opens in 1489, when Vlad, a lord of the principality of Wallachia, witnesses the death of his beloved Elisabeta on the battlefield and awakens as a vampire. It then leaps forward to Paris in 1889, where he encounters Mina, a woman with the exact face of his former love, setting the wheels of a tragic destiny in motion once more. While bringing the vampire’s otherworldly appearance to life through pale skin and grotesquely elongated fingernails, the director remains committed to his conviction that “at its core, this is a sublime love story,” giving the film a powerful emotional pull.

A weighty ensemble of internationally acclaimed actors raises the drama’s level of polish. Caleb Landry Jones, who won the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival, plays Dracula and conveys his character’s complex inner life, where madness and longing collide, through a commanding performance driven by his eyes.
