A courtroom drama about a brilliant mind taking on prejudice prepares to win over Japan

Kansai TV officially announced that ‘Extraordinary Attorney Minami’ will premiere at 10 p.m. on Oct. 19. When the original aired in 2022, it posted ENA’s highest rating ever at 17.5% and sparked a sensation by ranking No. 1 in Netflix’s non-English TV category for seven consecutive weeks. The Japanese adaptation underwent an extensive localization process to faithfully recreate the original’s weighty message and emotional impact.

Mana Ashida, who demonstrated her commanding acting ability in the film ‘Pacific Rim’ and the drama ‘Mother,’ has been cast as Minami Minamida, the protagonist. Minami boasts an impeccable résumé: She graduated first in her class from the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Law and passed the bar exam at the top of her class. But she struggles to find work because of social prejudice against autism spectrum disorder. By chance, she eventually joins one of the country’s largest law firms, where she uses her uniquely perceptive outlook to overcome complex challenges.

After the casting was confirmed, Mana Ashida expressed her deep affection for the original series. “I had been an avid fan of the original from the beginning. I was unbelievably surprised when I received the offer,” she said. “It is a major challenge for me as an actor, and it comes with a sense of responsibility, but I will bring my own Minami to life perfectly.”

She also praised the performance of the original’s leading actress, Park Eun-bin, calling “the distinctive lovability of Woo Young-woo the original’s central appeal.” She added, “Beyond the simple entertainment of a courtroom drama, it is an outstanding work that captures the relationships between its characters and their nuanced emotional arcs. The Japanese version will preserve those emotional textures in full.” ‘Extraordinary Attorney Minami’ will be offered simultaneously through the Fuji TV network and the global streaming service Netflix, once again demonstrating the strength of well-crafted courtroom dramas across Asia.
