Screen legend reaches a 'new summit' with a baton and manuscript paper, releasing 12 orchestral works composed over a lifetime

Legendary actor Anthony Hopkins, 88, who won two Academy Awards for best actor for The Silence of the Lambs and The Father, has reached the top of the classical music world as well as the heights of acting.

The Independent reported Tuesday, local time, that his first classical album, Life Is a Dream, has taken the No. 1 spot on the weekly classical chart of the UK Official Charts. The chart is a widely recognized weekly measure that combines audio streams, downloads and physical album sales in the United Kingdom.

The album features 12 orchestral works that Hopkins composed over his lifetime after teaching himself composition without formal musical training. It captures the full arc of his musical journey, which began when he wrestled with manuscript paper as a teenager. Its historical significance is underscored by the inclusion of 1947: Suite for Piano and Orchestra, which he composed in 1963.

In a recent interview with CNN, he spoke about his longstanding passion for classical music and delivered a weighty message: "It is never too late to pursue a dream."

World-class musicians joined forces to elevate the project. Maestro Gustavo Dudamel, who led the Los Angeles Philharmonic and will take over as music director of the New York Philharmonic next month, conducted the recording. The Philharmonia Orchestra in Britain, pianist Sergio Tiempo and cellist Gregorio Nieto also took part, filling out the arrangements with performances from the highest tier of the profession.

Laura Monks, CEO of Decca Records, which spearheaded the album's release, praised the project. "Working with Sir Anthony Hopkins and Gustavo Dudamel, along with everyone who contributed to this beautiful album, felt like a dream," she said. "As a composer and a steadfast supporter of classical music, I sincerely congratulate him on finally seeing his genius shine."

Meanwhile, part of the album's sales proceeds will be donated to relief and reconstruction efforts in Venezuela, Dudamel's home country, which has recently suffered extensive damage from a major earthquake. The veteran artist's efforts to make a positive impact beyond artistic achievement are resonating deeply around the world.
