[First Reactions from the Press Screening]
Tom Rhys Harries’ shocking transformation—and DC’s first R-rated body horror film! 〈Clayface〉 hits theaters October 21. 〈Clayface〉 is a body-horror thriller about a man who loses everything in an instant after becoming a rising Hollywood star. He uses cutting-edge technology to get his face back, but undergoes a horrific transformation that leaves even his human form crumbling, sending him on a desperate quest for revenge. Cineplay reporter Seong Chan-eol shares his impressions after seeing 〈Clayface〉 at the press screening.
Seong Chan-eol / ★★★★ / DC: a haven for villains, delivering the catharsis only a villain can
A superb villain spin-off that stands proudly alongside 〈Joker〉. Unless you can’t stomach graphic violence, you’ll find the film’s suspense and audacious killing scenes immensely thrilling. I found myself feeling sympathy for the protagonist’s story, even though he’s a “bad guy,” and wondering, “Is it okay to feel this way?” The film also does a terrific job of making him a full-fledged villain by the end. Tom Rhys Harries is striking in a role that swings between likability and repulsion. There are a few shortcomings, including a romance that feels somewhat out of place, but the way the film builds suspense around a single premise—and the scene direction that brings it to life—makes up for them. Despite its unpleasant story, I’d applaud the film for leaving me satisfied without a lingering bad taste.
