A new film from Yeon Sang-ho, the director who has helped drive the global rise of Korean content, has set a new milestone for the Korean film industry, selling to 118 countries worldwide before its release. According to distributor CJ ENM on the 19th, proceeds from overseas sales alone have already recouped the film’s entire net production cost, which was in the 500 million won range. The achievement is seen as significant in a theatrical market dominated by big-budget tentpole films, showing what a strong story and skilled direction can accomplish on their own.

Expanding a distinctive cinematic universe, Korean storytelling takes over screens worldwide
‘Lost Paradise’ is Yeon’s second polished, low-budget project, following last year’s well-received ‘The Face’. Rather than the dystopian imagination characteristic of Yeon’s films, this time he offers a tightly drawn story of fractures and healing: Soyoung (Kim Hyun-joo), a mother who lost her son in a disappearance, reunites with him, Sunwoo (Bae Hyun-sung), when he miraculously reappears nine years later.
The film’s artistic merit and broad appeal have already been proven at leading film festivals around the world. It premiered last month at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where it drew praise from critics, and received an enthusiastic response from Korean audiences at the 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) earlier this month. It has also been officially selected for the Korean Cinema Spotlight at the 46th Hawaii International Film Festival, which opens on the 21st, and will meet local audiences on the 1st and 4th of next month. The festival, a meeting place for Eastern and Western film cultures, highlights the film’s universal appeal across Asia and into the North American market.
A CJ ENM international distribution representative said, “Even within its distinctive mystery-thriller setup, the storytelling digs deeply into universal human emotions such as family and motherhood, creating a profound connection across borders and cultures.” The representative described this as the reason for the explosive interest from global buyers.
Without a lavish scale or massive budget, ‘Lost Paradise’ has captivated the global market through a meticulously crafted script and the actors’ powerful performances alone. The film opens in South Korean theaters on the 21st. The industry is watching closely to see what kind of impact the explosive on-screen chemistry between Kim Hyun-joo and Bae Hyun-sung will make at theaters this fall.
