[First Impressions]
Lee Sun-bin X Yoo Jae-myung X Kim Young-min X Jeon Seok-ho: a veteran dream team with a combined 238 years of acting experience! 〈Ugly Duckling Ms. Maeng〉 opens October 28. The mission comedy follows Maeng Bo-ram, a Korean language teacher from a small provincial town who unexpectedly joins the question-setting headquarters, sealed off for 40 days to prepare the College Scholastic Ability Test—a Grade 2 state secret in South Korea. There, she scrambles to write a “question without problems,” free of typos or anything anyone could dispute. Cineplay editor-in-chief Joo Seong-cheol shares his impressions after seeing the film at a press and distributor screening.
Joo Seong-cheol / ★★★ / A fresh premise, seasoned performances, and quite a few laughs
For starters, making CSAT question writers the subject of a film feels fresh. From Korean language teacher Maeng Bo-ram (Lee Sun-bin), who unexpectedly joins the question-setting headquarters sealed off for 40 days, to the entrenched question-setting committee chair (Yoo Jae-myung), the sharp-eyed review committee chair (Kim Young-min) and a live-in assessment institute employee (Jeon Seok-ho), earnest criticism of the education system and black-comedy farce come together roughly but in a way that feels familiar and approachable.
