Lee Chang-dong’s “Possible Love” Earns Three Nominations at 36th Gotham Awards, Set for Nov. 30 in New York

Following the Grand Jury Prize in Venice, the film enters one of the highest-profile ceremonies in American independent cinema

The new film from acclaimed director 'Lee Chang-dong', 'Possible Love', has earned nominations in three major categories at 'The Gotham Awards', often called the Oscars of American independent film, underscoring its artistic achievement.

According to the official announcement from the Gotham Awards committee on the 28th (local time), 'Possible Love' was nominated in key categories at the 36th Gotham Awards, including Best International Feature, Screenplay and Lead Performance. Director 'Lee Chang-dong' and screenwriter 'Oh Jung-mi' were both nominated for Screenplay, while 'Jeon Do-yeon', whose performance is marked by exceptional intensity, will compete against actors from around the world for the Lead Performance award.

Set for a global release on a streaming platform, 'Possible Love' tells the closely observed story of a couple in which one spouse has been laid off and a couple of documentary filmmakers. Their lives become intertwined through the making of a film, bringing them face to face with their different life paths and the deep desires hidden within them. The ambitious film marks director 'Lee Chang-dong''s return behind the camera for the first time in eight years, since 2018's internationally acclaimed 'Burning'. Led by 'Jeon Do-yeon', the ensemble also features some of South Korea's most acclaimed actors, including 'Sul Kyung-gu', 'Zo In-sung' and 'Cho Yeo-jeong', delivering a superb collective performance.

The film was previously selected for the competition at the 83rd 'Venice International Film Festival', held last September, where it won the Grand Jury Prize. It went on to screen at major international festivals, including the 51st 'Toronto International Film Festival' and the 31st 'Busan International Film Festival', earning unanimous praise from critics and audiences alike. The film first met audiences in South Korea with its theatrical release on the 23rd of last month and is set to launch simultaneously in around 190 countries worldwide on 'Netflix' on the 6th of next month.

Now in its 36th year, 'The Gotham Awards' is a prestigious ceremony that spotlights original and experimental independent films. It is considered an important indicator of what may lie ahead at the Academy Awards, or Oscars. Established in 2020, the Best International Feature category in particular brings together outstanding works from around the world. Last year, director 'Park Chan-wook''s 'No Other Choice' earned nominations in three categories, including Best International Feature. This year, director 'Lee Chang-dong' has taken up the mantle, once again demonstrating the stature of Korean cinema. The 36th Gotham Awards ceremony will be held in grand style in New York on the 30th of next month.
