An imperial romance starring Shin Mina X Ju Jihoon X Lee Jongsuk X Lee Seyoung! Disney+ has released episodes 1–4 of 〈The Remarried Empress〉. The epic romantic fantasy follows Navier (Shin Mina), the perfect empress of the Eastern Empire, whose husband, Emperor Sovieshu (Ju Jihoon), falls for a runaway slave, Rashta (Lee Seyoung), and informs her that he is divorcing her. Navier agrees on the condition that he approve her remarriage to Heinrey (Lee Jongsuk), prince of the Western Kingdom. Cineplay reporter Seong Chan-eol shares his review after binge-watching the first 4 episodes of 〈The Remarried Empress〉.
Seong Chan-eol / ★★★ / You can certainly see the money on screen, but the thrills fall a little short
A romantic fantasy with Korean actors that retains the original's setting, this is much more assured than I had feared. The costumes and sets, in particular, offer plenty of eye candy. The CGI is convincing enough where it needs to be, too. Still, it is watchable rather than anything more; look closely, and the unexplained details and characters going through the motions become distracting. The problem is that, through episode 4, the story is more subdued than expected, so it seems to need something that will really hook viewers going forward. On a personal note, it is also disappointing that the menswear designs do not mesh with the womenswear.
